Isight是一個讓產品、設計團隊、不同學科、不同軟體工具之間協同工作的軟體開
發環境。它克服了手工模擬設計的「瓶頸」以及多種學科結合的複雜挑戰,真正的
實現自動化的夢想。

基於Siu S.Tong在MIT做過的工作,1985年General Electric Corporate Research
and Development Center 開發了一個通用的軟體外殼,也就是Engineous軟體機器
人以執行數據處理中大量重複工作的自動化任務。它主要用於設計過程的彙集、自
動化和優化。最初這個軟體著重於解決複雜工程產品設計優化,如航空發動機、電
站透平機、電子設備等。

Engineous模擬設計軟體後來經過11年多來的改進發展,Engineous軟體公司開發出
了更通用的商業化軟體Isight。它主要側重於提供多學科設計優化和不同層次優化
的技術以及優化過程管理能力,解決了多學科交叉情況下協調優化設計過程多次疊
代、數據反覆輸入輸出時的操作的自動化,提供了一個優化工具包,將各種優化方
法(數值疊代算法、搜索式算法、啟髮式算法、實驗設計(DOE)、響應面模型
(RSM)等)有效的組織起來進行多學科的設計優化。

Process Integration and Automation
iSIGHT can drive a single simulation code, or many. Engineers often find
that it requires multiple cycles to solve their design problems.
A typical formulation might include a commercial CAD code to define and
parameterize geometry, a CAE solver to execute finite element analysis
and a post processor to evaluate results. Perhaps an Excel spreadsheet is
utilized for cost analysis. But iSIGHT is not limited to driving
commercial codes. Since iSIGHT uses a non-intrusive coupling approach, it
is equally adept at linking internally developed codes. Fortran, C++,
Visual Basic, Unix scripts - iSIGHT can handle them all. In fact, in most
cases, the first step in using iSIGHT is to link multiple processes
together.

The iSIGHT Process Integration GUI provides a point and click, building
block approach to layout the process description. The interface allows
the visualization of data flow and control flow, as well as a hierarchical
viewer that provides convenient navigation within the process.

The hierarchical layout allows multi-level problem formulation of tasks.
Each task can have its own design study strategy This unique task
modeling facility also gives iSIGHT the capability to support multi-
disciplinary design optimization (MDO) methods. MDO methods will be
discussed in a later section.

File Parser
Any time input or output files are required in a simulation process,
iSIGHT's File Parser can be employed to extract key parameters from these
files. This interface, accessed from Process Integration provides a set
of buttons that allows users to graphically navigate through text-based
files. Here, the users identify any values that will be changed during
the design process, or any parameters that need to be monitored for
acceptance criteria. Using File Parser can be compared to taking a
highlighter to a printed text file to mark important items in the body of
the text. Since the interface provides graphical actions and feedback,
users are not required to write code to create the commands necessary to
parse the data files. When communicating with simulation codes using the
File Parsing method, no modification of the source code is required.

iSIGHT simply writes data to input files and reads data from output files.

Optimization Methodologies
Optimization studies have repeatedly shown that there is no single
optimization technique that works best for all design problems. In fact,
a single technique may not work best for an individual design problem.

Instead, a combination of techniques can provide the best opportunity for
finding an optimal solution. Optimization results are greatly dependent
on the choice of the starting point, and the nature of the design space
itself (i.e., linear, non-linear, continuous, discontinuous, number of
variables, constraints, etc.). The iSIGHT system offers two solutions to
this problem. First, iSIGHT provides a collection of optimization
techniques that a user can interactively select and customize for a
particular design problem. Second, and more importantly, iSIGHT provides
a knowledge-directed and knowledge-supplemented approach to optimization.

The optimization techniques in iSIGHT can be divided into three main
categories: numerical, exploratory, and heuristic or knowledge based.
Numerical, the efficient hill climber optimization techniques, generally
assume the design space is unimodal, convex, and continuous. Exploratory
techniques avoid focusing on only a local region. They generally evaluate
designs throughout the design space in search of global optimum.

Heuristic techniques follow user-defined directions to parameter
characteristics, and their relative influence in obtaining the desired
solutions. Through the unique approach called interdigitation, iSIGHT
allows the static or dynamic combination of optimization techniques.
These hybrid optimization strategies consisting of multiple techniques
have been found to achieve best overall design for multi-disciplinary
design problems and those with discontinuous design space.
